Ortiz, E.; Morales, M.; Cartaya, Y.; Miranda, A.; Fonseca, E.; Paneque, K.; Caballero, V.; Martínez, C.; Díaz, Y..

Lepetit, J; Guiot, J; Martin, Y; Tagger, S.
To exploit the presence in the sea of microorganisms capable of degrading petroleum products a mineral fertilizer, containing immediatly assimilable nitrogen and phosphorus compounds, was used to increase the microbial population and therefore, the degradation potential of treated polluted waters. The fertilizer supply caused an increase in heterotrophic and hydrocarbon-splitting bacteria and an increase in the phytoplanktonic biomass. The latter is characterized by an increase in a few selected species; it constitutes an important supply of organic substances, and it is responsible for increasing the dissolved oxygen which is essential for petroleum oxidation. Supplying the fertilizer results in an increase in the treated water degradation potential and a...

Evaluation of the heterotrophic activity in waters by microanalytical methods. ArchiMer
Bertoni, R.
The radiochemical methods proposed for evaluating heterotrophic activity in waters have been severely criticized in recent years because they are not considered to be sufficiently realistic. Thus, the possibility of directly measuring the heterotrophic consumption of naturally occurring Organic Carbon (OC) in fresh water samples incubated under controlled conditions has been evaluated. The analytical performances of two OC analyzers utilizable for this purpose are discussed here, and some examples of the results obtained by the direct measurement of OC consumption are presented. The consumption rates thus measured ranged from 11.6 to 50.2 mu gC/ 1.h. Although the technique discussed here is less sensitive than radiochemical methods, the few assumptions...

Evolution de la communaute bacterienne heterotrophe de l'eau de mer lors d'une experience d'aquaculture de crevettes peneides en systemes clos ArchiMer
Sohier, L; Bianchi, M.
The quantitative and qualitative evolution of the heterotrophic bacterial community of sea water was studied throughout an experimental rearing of Penaeus japonicus in closed systems. Cluster analysis was realised on 417 strains coming from water sampled at different moments of the experiment. This collection includes 40 strains coming from a mussel used for diet and 40 strains coming from the digestive tract of one prawn after six months rearing. Quantitative and qualitative studies have both shown a similar evolution of heterotrophic microflora whatever the initial animal load was. The dendrogram obtained led to a description of characteristics of the various populations constituting the heterotrophic bacterial community of the water environment...

Interactions entre les bacteries et les algues dans une culture continue de phytoplancton naturel soumise aux conditions exterieures ArchiMer
Gauthier, M; Martin, Y; Lelong, P; Breittmayer, V.
During an experimental continuous culture of natural marine phytoplankton in environmental conditions, microbial and biochemical tests performed to study production of antibacterial and antialgal substances by unicellular algae. Some parameters were further monitored to characterize bacteria and phytoplankton growth. The presence of inhibitors of algal origin was studied both in the water and in the algal biomass at different phases of the culture, through bioassays performed with bacteria (marine pseudomonads and vibrios, and telluric strains) and several algal strains. Interpretation of the results is difficult. Two successive phases appeared during the growth of phytoplankton, with two different algal populations. The unsteady population of phase I was...

Microflores sulfatoreductrices en milieu subantarctique. Relations avec quelques parametres physicochimiques et biologiques. (Microflores totales et heterotrophes) ArchiMer
Delille, D; Bouvy, M.
The archipelago of Kerguelen with its complex fjord distribution is particularly interesting for the study of anoxic systems. Between 1968 and 1972, several stations were investigated fortnightly. One of these was further sampled weekly throughout 1982. Each sample series of sediment included the superficial aerobic and subsuperficial anaerobic levels. Each level was examined for direct epifluorescent counts, heterotrophic and sulfate-reducing bacterial numbers by M.P.N. methods, organic carbon and sulfide measurements. Sulfate-reducing bacteria seemed less related to total biomass than the heterotrophic microflora, the latter being dependent on organic supplies. The hydrogen sulfide production was directly related to the presence of sulfate reducers;...

Taxonomy and distribution of hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria from the Ixtoc-1 area. ArchiMer
Lizarraga, P; Munoz, R; Porras, A; Izquierdo, V; Wongchang, I.
A bacteriological monitoring program has been established in order to evaluate the impact of oil activities. The ratio of heterotrophic-hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria was used to follow the evolution in time of both populations. Numerical taxonomic methods were employed in order to define ecotypes of marine oil degraders.

Transfert et mineralisation de la matiere organique azotee a travers les deux premiers echelons de la micro communaute heterotrophe ArchiMer
Vanwambeke, F; Bianchi, M.
Bacterial response to organic (amino acids) or inorganic (NH sub(4) super(+)) nitrogen was studied in 350 liter closed batch systems. The experiments demonstrate an important NH sub(4) super(+) remineralization associated with bacterial growth. The differences between substrate and bacterial C/N ratios and bacterial metabolic demands partly explain the high values of ammonia produced. Grazing by heterotrophic microflagellates resulted in an important release of NH sub(4) super(+). This suggests and important role of grazers for the nitrogen remineralization in natural waters.
